✦  AMSTERDAM AFTER DARK

Nightlife in Amsterdam

Sip cocktails by the canals, settle in for live jazz or dance into the early hours. Find your kind of night in Amsterdam.

Guide to Amsterdam Nightlife

A night out in Amsterdam can mean dancing to a DJ set, listening to jazz in a small café or catching up over cocktails. You can build an evening around a particular artist or event, or start with dinner and see where the night takes you.

Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein are useful starting points, with bars, clubs and live music venues close together. There is plenty to explore beyond these squares too, from cocktails on the Singel and Haarlemmerstraat to club nights in the Eastern Docklands.

This guide brings together nightclubs, cocktail bars, live music cafés and dinner shows to help you find an evening that suits you. Check each venue’s programme before making plans: the music, atmosphere, admission rules and opening times can change from one event to the next.

Before you go: Check the event’s minimum age, dress code, ID requirements and last entry time. A nightlife pass only covers participating venues and eligible events; it does not guarantee admission to every club in this guide. Plan your journey home before heading out.

Nightclubs & DJ Nights

Find your night on the dance floor, with clubs hosting DJ sets, themed parties and a range of electronic music styles.

Jimmy Woo Amsterdam

Jimmy Woo opened just off Leidseplein in 2003 and has been part of Amsterdam’s club scene ever since. It is known for its stylish, slightly mysterious atmosphere and draws a mix of locals and international visitors. The club also has some genuine design pedigree: the visual identity created for Jimmy Woo by Amsterdam studio …,staat won a Dutch Design Award in 2004.

Design and atmosphere The two floors have very different personalities. Upstairs feels more like a lounge, with a bar and Asian-inspired details throughout the interior. Head downstairs and the focus shifts firmly to the dance floor. Look up and you will see one of Jimmy Woo’s best-known features: a low ceiling covered with thousands of tiny lights that change with the music.

Music and crowd Jimmy Woo is more about the overall night than one particular style of music. DJs and events vary, so check the programme before you go if the line-up matters to you. Expect a dressed-up crowd and a polished club atmosphere rather than a casual night at the pub.

Door policy and dress code Do not assume that buying a ticket or turning up early automatically gets you through the door. Jimmy Woo has a door policy and expects guests to dress accordingly. Sportswear, flip-flops, sandals and caps are not allowed. Men are not allowed to wear shorts. You will also need a valid physical ID; a photo or digital copy will not do.

Good to know You will find Jimmy Woo at Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 18, just off Leidseplein. Current opening hours are Thursday from 23:00 to 03:00 and Friday and Saturday from 23:00 to 04:00. Check the club’s latest programme and opening hours before setting off, especially if you are planning your evening around a particular event.

Escape Club

Escape has been part of Amsterdam’s nightlife since 1986, making it one of the city’s longest-running large clubs. Its location could hardly be more central: the entrance is right on Rembrandtplein, surrounded by bars, restaurants and late-night venues. Inside, Escape is all about scale, with a large dance floor, powerful sound, extensive lighting and big-screen visuals creating the kind of high-energy atmosphere you would expect from a mainstream city-centre club.

Music and atmosphere Escape is a sizeable venue, with the main club accommodating up to around 1,500 guests. Different spaces can also be combined for larger events. Music and DJs vary depending on the night, so rather than assuming what will be playing, check the programme before you go. Expect busy dance floors, elaborate lighting and visuals, and a crowd that comes here for a proper night out rather than a quiet drink.

Events and programming The programme changes throughout the week, with regular club nights, guest DJs and special events. Some nights have their own concept, line-up and entrance conditions, which means the experience can differ considerably from one visit to the next. If a particular style of music matters to you, have a look at the agenda before buying your ticket.

Good to know Escape is at Rembrandtplein 11 and is currently open seven nights a week. Regular opening hours are 23:00 to 04:00 from Sunday to Thursday and 23:00 to 05:00 on Friday and Saturday, although individual events can differ. Age requirements and admission conditions can also vary by event, so check the details for your night before setting off.

Chicago Social Club

Chicago Social Club is a late-night bar and club at Leidseplein 12, right in the middle of one of Amsterdam’s busiest nightlife areas. You can drop in for drinks or stay on for a club night, which makes it a handy choice if your group cannot quite decide between sitting at the bar and heading for the dance floor.

Venue and atmosphere Spread across two floors, Chicago Social Club feels more intimate than Amsterdam’s larger warehouse-style clubs. Stairs, a balcony and smaller corners break up the space, so you can move between the busier parts of the venue and quieter spots to catch up with friends. The atmosphere can change considerably depending on the night, which is part of the appeal.

Music and club nights The programme changes throughout the week, with house, disco and more eclectic sounds appearing alongside other styles depending on the event and DJs. Super Social is the club’s long-running Thursday night, while Friday and Saturday programmes vary. Check the line-up before you go rather than assuming every weekend will sound the same.

Opening hours The bar and club have separate opening times. The bar is currently open Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday from 20:00 to 04:00, and Friday and Saturday from 20:00 to 05:00; Monday is closed. The club normally opens Thursday from 23:00 to 04:00 and Friday and Saturday from 23:00 to 05:00. Special events may have different times, so check the programme for your date.

Good to know Chicago Social Club generally operates a 21+ policy, although some events may have their own age requirements. Check the conditions for your particular club night before buying a ticket. Coats and bags need to go into a locker, and the venue advises bringing a €2 coin for one.

💡 Sababa tip: Have dinner near Leidseplein or check the programme at ITA, Melkweg or Paradiso before your club night. Leave time to get to Chicago Social Club for your chosen event.

Panama Club Amsterdam

Panama brings a different side of Amsterdam nightlife to the Eastern Docklands, away from the busy squares of the city centre. Set in a historic building on Oostelijke Handelskade, the venue hosts everything from club nights and DJ events to live performances. There is no single Panama experience: the music, crowd and even the way the spaces are used can change considerably from one event to the next, so check what is on before you go.

The venue The historic setting gives Panama plenty of character, while inside it works as a modern club and events venue. The main club-theatre holds around 900 guests, with additional capacity on the balcony, and there is also a smaller studio space that can be used separately or alongside the main room. Panama also offers VIP tables and bottle-service packages for selected events.

Music and crowd Panama is not tied to one particular sound. Depending on the night, you might find techno, trance, hardstyle, amapiano, urban music or a live performance, alongside parties devoted to hits from past decades. That variety also means the crowd can be completely different from one event to the next. Choose your night for the line-up rather than simply turning up and hoping the music suits you.

Good to know Panama is at Oostelijke Handelskade 4 in Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands. Opening times, minimum age and admission conditions depend on the event, so check the individual listing before buying a ticket. If you are interested in a VIP table, check the available arrangements directly with Panama. For late events, it is also worth planning your journey back in advance.

💡 Sababa tip: Walk along the waterfront towards Java-eiland or KNSM-eiland before the party. Choose your Panama event for the music and plan your journey home in advance.

Live Music & Jazz

See a band live, settle in for an evening of jazz or discover an artist you have never heard before. Amsterdam has everything from intimate music cafés to some of the city’s best-known concert venues.

Melkweg

Melkweg, Dutch for “Milky Way,” is one of Amsterdam’s best-known music and cultural venues, tucked away on Lijnbaansgracht just behind Leidseplein. It began life here in 1970, when a former milk factory was turned into a temporary cultural project, and has been a permanent cultural centre since 1973. Today, concerts and club nights share the building with film and exhibitions, with emerging talent appearing alongside established international artists.

Music and atmosphere One of the things that makes Melkweg interesting is that no two visits necessarily feel the same. The building has three concert and club halls, MAX, OZ and UP, ranging from a large main hall to a much more intimate space. Depending on the night, you could be here for a rock concert, hip-hop show, electronic set or an artist you had never heard of before walking through the door.

More than a concert venue Melkweg has always mixed different sides of pop and underground culture. Alongside live music and club nights, the programme includes film and visual art, and Melkweg Expo regularly presents contemporary exhibitions. That mix is part of the venue’s character and makes it worth checking the full programme rather than looking only at the headline concerts.

Good to know Melkweg is at Lijnbaansgracht 234A, a short walk from Leidseplein. Several events can take place in the building at the same time, so check your ticket for the correct hall, start time and entrance information. Age restrictions and ticket conditions can vary by event. If you have accessibility requirements, Melkweg provides detailed information for each hall, as the layout and seating options differ.

Before the show at Melkweg

💡 Sababa tip: Walk along the Lijnbaansgracht or visit Vondelpark before dinner near Leidseplein. Check your ticket for the hall, doors and start time before heading to Melkweg.

A band performing for a packed audience beneath Paradiso’s balconies.

Paradiso

Paradiso is one of Amsterdam’s best-known music venues, and the building is almost as memorable as the artists who play there. Just a short walk from Leidseplein, it occupies a former meeting hall built in 1880 for the Vrije Gemeente. Paradiso opened here as a cultural centre in 1968 and has since grown into a fixture of Amsterdam’s live music and nightlife scene.

The venue Step into the Main Hall and the building’s history is still easy to see. Tall stained-glass windows rise behind the stage, while balconies overlook a room that holds around 1,500 people. Upstairs, the much smaller Upstairs Hall has space for around 210, giving concerts there a completely different, more intimate feel. It is worth checking which room your show is in, as the experience can be very different.

Music and club nights Paradiso is best known for live music, but the programme goes well beyond concerts. Club nights and DJ events have been part of its story since the early 1980s, alongside a broader cultural programme. What you get depends entirely on the date, so choose your visit around the artist or event rather than simply turning up for a night out.

A bit of music history The list of artists who have played here reads like a journey through several decades of popular music. Prince, David Bowie, Nirvana and The Rolling Stones have all performed at Paradiso, while new and emerging artists continue to appear alongside established names. Nirvana’s 1991 concert and The Rolling Stones’ intimate shows in 1995 are among the performances that have become part of the venue’s history.

Good to know The historic Paradiso building is at Weteringschans 6-8, close to Leidseplein. Paradiso also organises concerts and events at other venues across Amsterdam, so always check the location on your ticket. For many events in the main Paradiso building you will also need a Paradiso membership in addition to your event ticket. Check the event page for the venue, door and start times, age restrictions and membership requirements before you go.

An audience watching a band perform live at The Waterhole.

The Waterhole

The Waterhole is a live music bar just off Leidseplein where the formula is refreshingly simple: bands on stage, drinks at the bar and pool tables nearby. Live music is on the programme every day, with everything from acoustic sets and open jam sessions to full bands playing rock, pop, funk, soul and other crowd-friendly styles. It is an easy choice if you prefer a lively music bar to a formal concert venue.

Music and atmosphere The Waterhole is casual and energetic rather than polished or theatrical. Some nights start with an acoustic act before a full band takes over later, while others revolve around an open jam session. The musical direction changes during the week, with funk, soul, pop and disco regularly appearing alongside plenty of rock, particularly towards the weekend. Check the programme before you go if the music matters to you.

Pool and daytime drinks You do not have to wait until the evening to drop in. The Waterhole opens during the day and has several pool tables, making it an easy place to meet friends for a game and a drink before the live music gets underway. The bar currently advertises a daily happy hour from 12:00 to 21:00; check the current menu for the drinks and prices included.

Live music and jam sessions There is live music every day, and some evenings feature more than one act. Open jam sessions are also a regular part of the programme, giving the place a slightly different feel from a conventional music venue. Performance times vary, so check the full schedule for your date rather than assuming the first band always starts at the same time.

Good to know The Waterhole is at Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 49, just behind Leidseplein. It stays open until 03:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until 04:00 on Friday and Saturday. Daytime opening times can vary, particularly at the weekend, so check the latest information if you are planning an afternoon visit.

Dinner, then live music

💡 Sababa tip: Have dinner around Leidseplein, then head to The Waterhole for the evening’s live music. Check the programme for the first act rather than assuming a fixed start time.

Jazz Café Alto

Jazz Café Alto has been part of Amsterdam’s jazz scene since 1953. Tucked away on Korte Leidsedwarsstraat, just behind Leidseplein, it is a small, intimate café where live jazz and blues take over every night of the week. The line-up mixes experienced musicians with emerging talent, making Alto the kind of place where you can come for a particular artist or simply walk in and see who is playing.

Atmosphere and experience Alto is small, cosy and all about the music. The musicians perform close to the audience, so even if you arrive without knowing who is on stage, it does not take long to feel part of the evening. Space is limited, particularly at weekends, so arriving early is a good idea if you would rather find a seat than squeeze in once the music has started.

Live music every night The doors currently open at 20:30 and the music starts at 21:30. From Sunday to Thursday, live music continues until 01:30, with the café closing at 03:00. On Friday and Saturday, performances continue until 02:30 and the café closes at 04:00. Check the programme before you go, both for the evening’s musicians and for any changes to the regular schedule.

Good to know Jazz Café Alto is at Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 115, a short walk from Leidseplein. Admission charges can vary, so check the latest information rather than relying on older prices online. You do not need to be a serious jazz follower to enjoy the place: pick an evening, order a drink and give the musicians a little time to win you over.

Cocktail Bars

From perfectly made classics to cocktails you probably would not think of ordering yourself, Amsterdam has plenty of places worth settling into for a drink. Pick a bar for a date, an evening with friends or simply because the cocktail menu looks too interesting to ignore.

Bottle-lined bar and seating at Flying Dutchmen Cocktails.

Flying Dutchmen Cocktails

Flying Dutchmen Cocktails is tucked away inside the historic Odeon building at Singel 460, close to Spui and the Flower Market. Founded in 2017 by bartenders Tess Posthumus and Timo Janse, the bar built its reputation around classic and neo-classic cocktails, good bartending and the stories behind the drinks. Today, Flying Dutchmen is owned by Tess Posthumus, Rosa Moolenaar and Alina Lucia, and the focus remains firmly on helping guests explore the world of cocktails without making it feel intimidating.

Classics at the heart of the menu Flying Dutchmen takes its inspiration from cocktails created by generations of bartenders before them, alongside more modern interpretations. You do not need to arrive knowing the difference between a Martinez and a Manhattan. Tell the bartender what spirits and flavours you enjoy and let them point you towards something that suits you.

Look behind the bar Even before you order, the backbar is hard to miss. Flying Dutchmen has more than 900 different spirits, which it describes as the largest backbar in the Netherlands. For anyone curious about whisky, rum, gin, jenever or lesser-known bottles, there is plenty here to explore beyond the cocktail menu itself.

A little Amsterdam history overhead Do not forget to look up. Flying Dutchmen is inside the Odeon, a national monument completed in 1662, and the historic ceiling includes protected paintings by Nicolaas de Heldt Stockade. The four seasons appear in the corners, with Bacchus representing autumn. It is an unusual bit of seventeenth-century Amsterdam to find above a modern cocktail bar.

Good to know Flying Dutchmen Cocktails was named Best Cocktail Bar by Esquire in 2018 and has received several other industry awards over the years. The bar is currently open seven days a week from 17:00 to 04:00. The entrance is inside sister bar Belly of the Beast at Singel 460; once inside, look for the stairs leading up to Flying Dutchmen. Access is via steep stairs to the first floor. Contact the venue about access before visiting if needed.

Dinner Shows & Experiences

Looking for more than dinner or drinks? These Amsterdam nights add something extra, from live performances at your table to unusual experiences where the setting is all part of the fun.

SUPPER

SUPPER is one of those Amsterdam venues where dinner is only the beginning of the night. Set inside the historic Odeon building at Singel 460, it combines dining, live entertainment, music and clubbing under one roof. Come for the dinner show and, if you are not ready to call it a night afterwards, stay as the venue shifts into club mode.

Dinner and the show The evening starts around the table, with food accompanied by music, visual elements and live performances. SUPPER treats dinner as part of the entertainment rather than something that happens before it, so expect plenty going on around you while you eat. The exact programme can change, which is part of the concept.

From dinner to club night Once the dinner show finishes, the evening does not necessarily end. SUPPER transitions into a nightclub, with DJs, music and a livelier late-night atmosphere. Restaurant guests receive club admission with their booking, making it easy to stay in the same place rather than heading across Amsterdam in search of somewhere to dance.

Atmosphere SUPPER is bold, theatrical and deliberately different from a conventional restaurant. It attracts a mixed, international crowd and works particularly well for a celebration, a date or a group that wants dinner and nightlife rolled into one evening. If you are looking for a quiet meal and uninterrupted conversation, this probably is not the place to choose.

Good to know SUPPER is at Singel 460 in central Amsterdam. Dinner shows, club nights, opening times and admission conditions can vary depending on the date, so check the programme before booking. It is also worth checking exactly what your dinner reservation includes, particularly if you plan to stay for the club afterwards.

Before the SUPPER show

💡 Sababa tip: Walk along the Singel or explore Spui before your dinner reservation. Flying Dutchmen Cocktails is also in the Odeon building; check your SUPPER booking if you plan to stay for the club.

Visitors drinking from ice glasses beside a ship’s wheel in Amsterdam Icebar.

Amsterdam Icebar

Amsterdam Icebar is a short walk from Rembrandtplein, right by the Amstel, and offers a very different kind of stop on a day or night out in the city. The ice room is kept at a steady -10°C, with ice sculptures, frozen walls and even glasses made from real ice. The whole experience takes around 45 minutes, so it is easy to combine with dinner, sightseeing or an evening around Rembrandtplein.

What to expect Your visit starts in the warm front bar, designed as a sailor’s tavern. From there, the experience takes you on an Arctic adventure inspired by the age of Dutch exploration. Before entering the ice room, you are given a warm coat and gloves to wear over your own clothes. Once inside, you have up to 20 minutes to explore, have your drinks and find out just how long -10°C still feels like fun.

Three drinks included Your ticket comes with three drink tokens. The first is for a cocktail, beer or soft drink in the warm bar, while the other two are used for drinks inside the Icebar, served in glasses made of real ice. Alcohol-free options are available too. You can order extra drinks in the warm bar, but not once you are inside the ice room.

How long to allow The complete experience lasts around 45 minutes, including up to 20 minutes inside the Icebar. There is no need to rush off afterwards: you can stay longer in the warm bar once your time in the cold is over.

Good to know Amsterdam Icebar is at Amstel 194-196 and admission is strictly for visitors aged 18 and over. Bring valid ID. A warm coat and gloves are provided, but long trousers and closed shoes are still a good idea; bare legs and open shoes are not recommended. If you have a timed ticket, arrive around 20 minutes before your slot so you have time to check in and enjoy your first drink. You can take your own photos inside, but food is not served at the Icebar. The ice room has a 5 cm step, and the venue says it is not suitable for electric wheelchairs. Contact the venue about access before booking.

After the Icebar

💡 Sababa tip: Wear closed shoes and long trousers for the ice room, even with the coat provided. Afterwards, walk along the Amstel towards Rembrandtplein for dinner or continue towards the Magere Brug.
